Follow the Money research can be complex and time-consuming. We offer a range of tools and training to support advocates with these investigations, and the techniques described on the Following the Money to Justice website are proven to be effective. But they take practice, and they have limits.

Our researchers have decades of combined experience doing this work, using a range of open-access and subscription-only tools to uncover otherwise-hidden information and actors involved. We also have a track record of translating this information into advocacy strategies that work.
Communities affected by a harmful investment project—or the advocates supporting them—can request a Follow the Money investigation and related advocacy advice from our team by filling out our request form.
Eligibility
- Are supporting communities affected by harmful projects
- Are committed to supporting the affected communities long-term
- Have clear advocacy goals
- Have the time and resources to work on advocacy suggestions that are provided
Requests should be related to projects that are:
- Causing human rights and/or environmental abuses
- Controlled by a publicly traded company
- Currently operating or under development
Given capacity restraints, we may not be able to fulfill every request. We currently prioritize requests that align with our strategic focus on advancing a just energy transition and an effective response to the climate emergency. That includes inquiries from communities fighting climate-busting fossil fuel projects and those working to ensure that “transition mineral” extraction and renewable energy projects respect and fulfill local communities’ rights and development aspirations.
What to Expect
After receiving your request, we will assess whether our approach is suitable for your case. If it is, we will place it in our research queue and provide you with an estimated completion date. Because we are digging deep and try to follow as many leads as we can, our investigations typically take about 3 months from start to finish, though this timeframe varies based on the complexity of the request and the other investigations we are working on at the time.
When our research is complete, we will provide you with a concise, easy-to-understand report that lays out our findings, along with tailored advice on how you might put the information to use in advocacy. We will also hold a video conference or in-person workshop to answer questions and brainstorm advocacy strategies.
We usually provide this service free of charge, though we may request a fee from international organizations with larger budgets to help subsidize our work with groups in the Global South or with more limited resources.
